MTA Abandons Plan to Ban Subway Photography

Just in - according to ABC News, the MTA has abandoned their plan to ban subway photography:

A proposal to ban cameras in subways to prevent terrorism has been dropped by police and transit officials. The move comes a year after city transit officials came up with the idea to forbid photography, videotaping and filming in subway stations.

The New York Daily News reported in Sunday's editions that police and transit officials said a ban is not needed to secure the nation's largest mass transit system.

The proposal by NYC Transit, a division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, had been criticized as too far-reaching by civil libertarians, photographers and some city officials.

Looks like a combination of common sense and public outrage worked!

I wonder how long it's going take the NYPD to stop harrasing us (oh wait I know that answer, never). I intend to make copies of the clearest article and pass it out to officials underground. I can't wait to be able to stand by a token both and make images without the anxiety of waiting for the token both operator to squawk at me.

I took some photographs underground today and with a lot less anxiety than in the past. I still have no intentions of photographing people, but you can get some great abstract shots down there.

I find things much less tense in smaller/less crowded stations. Who knows why. Maybe bigger crowds draw out grandstanders who want to make a show and be confrontational? Or maybe it's just that there are more people present-- improving the odds that one of them will be aggressive...

I actually find it easier photographing when there are lots of people around, for instance a packed car. If I see someone is getting antsy I just play it off like I was photographing the person behind, next too or some where else in the car. It almost always works.

Interesting! Truth be told, I tend to avoid in-car shots (at least, shots of other people who are in the same car as me). Something about the claustrophobia of not having an exit route, if someone says "boo," is discomforting to me. Suppose it's time to get over that.

The foto linked above was shot from inside a car. Tho obviously the chap with the sign was not in that car.
