Random Walks: NYC

Recently, NYC Photoblogger Mike Natale introduced an event for NYC photographers where they could participate in a random walk around a NYC neighborhood and post the results on flickr. The following is an exerpt from Mike's recent experience that led him to the idea of Random Walks: NYC.

I flipped a coin before I went out my door today. It was heads, I headed right. I got to the corner and flipped again, it was heads again, I went right again. I kept this up for a couple of hours and took photos along the way. This brought me up and down streets in my neighborhood that I don't often travel, and of course some that I am on all the time.

While the frequency of the Random Walks depends on the need for someone to organize a walk in their respective neighborhoods and the availability of photographers in that neighborhood, Mike is already scheduling the first official walk for Sunday, June 5th. If you are available, the walk will begin at the St. Mark's place and Avenue A entrance of Tompkins Park at 2:00PM.

For further details, please contact Mike at gametone {at} wrybread.com

And for details on posting your results to the appropriate Flickr group, please continue reading.

Wherever or whenever you decide to walk, you can post your results to the Random Walks: NYC Flickr group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/random-walks-nyc/

We ask that you please limit your photographs to organized walks. Individual walkabouts should be posted to the official NYC Photobloggers group at http://flickr.com/groups/nyc-photo/.

Also, stay tuned for information on a Lunchtime: NYC event in the works!

I'm trying to think of a system that will make it possibe to reconstruct the walk. One idea would be instead of using a coin, picking some printed slips out of a hat. Then if I keep the picked slips in order it'll be possible to retrace our route on a map later. Be fun to post that map to flickr later. I know from my solo random-walk last Sunday that I was totally confused afterwards, as to exactly where I shot some of the pix. This method will also let me add a "go forward" to the "left" and "right" possibilities, which should broaden the area covered. Anyone else have any ideas on this?
